My latest series of artworks has me exploring the genre of grid portraits and seeing where I can create unique visuals within that genre. This is one of the more interesting results I have gotten in this process.
The portrait is actually based of two very similar images, which are misaligned slightly and then masked with a checkerboard pattern. Then all I do is recreate the grid on paper and copy what I see in each square.
Here is a previous exploration using the same set of images. The first one is 8x8, second is 16x16 and the third is 32x32. This exercise was undertaken to increase my understanding of value, so my later portraits can be more accurate while also making me used to the pace of such a piece.
